Days in school physics lab - 1

In this post, I would recollect some remarkable moments of physics experiments during my undergraduate period.

Though I did conducted several experiments during my high school years, I didn’t really accomplish any formal reports or presentations about those experiments. Still, with composing this post, I’d love to paste some archive photos here to cherish the past.

The sweet past

My first impression of experiments was established when I was in high school. Though I did conducted some really easy ones earlier, they were never formal enough. Growing a little bit elder, I got better knowledge about the general procedure of experiments.

当我还是一个中学生的时候,所做的一切实验真的很难称得上是“实验”了。无论从实验步骤的设计,到实验各种变量的控制,再到实验后的归纳总结,完全都是在玩儿票。只不过,附中为我们提供了开放而包容的成长环境(现在更佳,可惜没赶上),让我们能够尽可能地在狭长的校园里实现自己的一切想法。

这几张图分别是高一和高二的时候做的几个小实验。分别选了物理化学生物各一个。

  • 物理:探究压电陶瓷发电的可能性。当时的想法很朴素,就是将耗散的振动能转化为电能重新利用。而且市面上已经有日本的案例,地铁口人流量发的电足够点亮一盏数十瓦的灯泡。觉得有点搞头。当然啦,最后发现转化效率太低,单个圆形压电片只能输出mW级别的功率。

  • 化学:测量学校各处水质。其实化学还做过各种勾兑试剂的熊实验……都是被化学吧害的,此处不表。这个是当初化学会办得一个中学生力所能及的实验活动。我们拿着PH计到处测,测了十余个水样,得出了一些简单的结论。缓冲液倒是自己稀释的……

  • 生物:了解不同实物的保质期情况。这个实验比较复杂,自己调了牛肉膏蛋白胨琼脂培养基,用刮刀涂布,还用了离心机分离了试验样品的固体和液体。当然,无菌操作的一系列规范自己也了解了一遍,还有一次到实验室早了结果顺便学习了一下电泳……

所有的这一切,全凭兴趣。现在回忆起来,或许就是当时这种对实验孜孜不倦的执着,最终支持我渡过了大学这四年,学习一个并不擅长的专业的种种纠结与不顺吧。

As it says, “All roads lead to Rome”. With the intuitional passion of experiments, I finally sailed it through the entangled and convoluted undergraduate period.

Freshman in University!

I never thought about being a student of B.S. before I finally & accidentally enrolled by BUPT. Since I formerly applied for THU as B.E. in electrical engineering, I assumed that most of my time should be spent in dealing with circuits and components but not physics principles. However, life is like a box of chocolate, you never know what you are going to get.

上了物理专业,自知四年将会离不开实验。果不其然,从大一下学期开始,从基础实验,四大力学再到现代物理,一股脑的实验铺天盖地席卷而来。比较痛苦的是前期手写实验报告。整个2014年估计光是物理实验报告我就写了近3万字。很可惜,大部分手写稿件佚散了,还好我尚存留了一部分电子的备份。以飨回忆。

比较有代表性的照片放一张吧~ 这是我和科同学同组做chaos的labview测量实验留念。刚上一个学期大学课程,对chaos这么新奇的东西自然一点概念都没有。甚至一直到了大二下学期,我对chaos才有了最基本的一点点认识。当时是用蔡氏电路做的阵法混沌,那个大电感是老师亲自手绕的,自然效果极佳。到了后来自己做时不知道,去中发批了一堆电感,结果根本振荡不起来……这些都是后话了。

关于chaos我将会在本系列接下来的文章里专门写它一写,因为确实和它有过一段缠绵悱恻的记忆……大一下基本就是这个实验比较耀眼,其他的诸如电桥,硅光电池特性,杨氏模量等等都没啥可说的……另外值得一提的是光偏振的一个实验,最后结果到现在我也没能理解。当然学长在一篇论文里阐述了他的考虑1,但我当时确实是不明白,实验条件不总是“理想”的吗,怎么会有影响最终结果的局限呢?

接下来的大二,主要就是光学实验和近代物理实验了。印象比较深的就是分光计、F-P干涉仪、迈克尔逊干涉仪三个。每次调光路的时候都会出现“诶,我的限位螺丝都拧到头了怎么还没法对准”的困惑……尤其是迈克尔逊干涉仪的干涉环,因为自己有点近视,看了半天也不知道到底对没对准。这里放一张分光计的图吧。第一次看到三棱镜把低压汞灯的四条谱线分开,每一条都清晰而没有失焦时真的很兴奋。

Modern Physics

My junior year was spent on more modern Physics experiments, like black body radiation, Zeeman effect, optical-magnetic resonance, X-ray diffraction and liquid crystal properties measurements. With doing those experiments, I found that the era of mid-20th century was so magnificent! Physicists was so innovative and rich in imagination!

现代物理实验有几个比较难以调的。首推光磁共振……大部分和磁相关的物理实验都不简单,在我看来还是人类尚未完全理解磁的本质的缘故。无论是蔡氏电路中至关重要的电感,还是各式需要匀强磁场配合的实验,都难以保证条件理想。甚至医用的MRI也很难获得更高分辨率的图像,归根到底都是因为没有完美的对磁场的控制。

核磁共振定特征峰的方法第一次亲手尝试,的确是鉴定物质种类的好方法。塞曼效应着实很难调整。本来仪器就有点老化,加上限位螺丝再次蛋疼,再加上CCD分辨率不忍直视。最后分裂环并不是那么清晰。如今如此发达的科技加持仍然困难,可以想见当年塞曼发现这个现象的时候想要重复多么麻烦!

最后就是大三的实验了。比较简单,调了两个激光器:氦氖激光器,半导体泵浦激光器。不得不说小激光器都比较难调,要是那些更大的谐振腔,光是校准光路估计都要很长时间了……从这两个实验中,我切实理解了非线性光学的重要性。各种非线性效应是当今光电子学科发展的重要理论基础。
